Phil “Ducky” Gulizia was born in Omaha, NE, on November 23, 1923. He lived most of his early life on William Street, attending Omaha Technical High School and graduating from Omaha South High School. He served in World War II as an infantry soldier in the Pacific. He was an accomplished trumpet player, and after returning home from the war, resumed playing with the Eddie Haddad Band. At a dance in 1947, he met his future wife Marjean Veitch, and they were married on May 14, 1949. He worked for North American Construction, building air bases in Greenland and Iceland, where he spent six month stints in 1951, 1952 and 1953. Besides his love for music, he always loved to gamble, and although his employment history included jobs with the U.S. Post Office and Continental Can Company, and owning a bar, more than anything else, Phil was one of the best-known bookmakers in Omaha.
