Born in Akron, Ohio, to European immigrants. The original name was Kuemmerl (which itself possesses a variety of spellings), and he appears to have changed his name during the WWII era to "Kemmel".
He was baptised in St Bernard's Catholic church (Akron, Ohio).
In 1915, he began working at the age of 16, operating as a time keeper/clerk at Goodyear. This was the very humble start to what would span several decades of his career working for Goodyear.
In 1922, at the age of 23, he left Ohio to attend a training school in Los Angeles County, California, USA, and was named "Foreman of the Squadron" there that same year.
He was married twice, first to Wilma Nixon, with whom he had three children (Mary Louise, Elizabeth Jean, and William Anthony Jr), and after she died he married Mary Rooker.
He was well known in life for being an industrious person, his hobby of deep sea fishing off the coast of Florida, and being a rather devout member of the Catholic church.
