Auler served as an engineer. Between 1853-1854, he was a brakeman, flagman and fireman for the Erie railroad.
Aular was married in 1858 to Miss Delia McKee of Dunkirk, New York. She died before him. Their son was George Auler.
In 1862, he enlisted in Company G of the 2nd New York Volunteers, under Captain Bliss. He fought in the battles of Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg and Gettysburg. He was discharged after three years and three months of service in 1865.
