Johan was first listed in Maxatawny Township in Berks County between 1761 and 1764, when he was listed as single on the tax list. By 1766, he had married Susannah Zimmerman and was listed as married. He continued to be listed through 1780. He and Susannah bought land in Maxatawny Township on March 29, 1775. Johan served as a private during the Revolutionary War in the 4th Company under Captain George Kemp and he took the oath of allegiance in 1778. He was a tanner and later an inn keeper, as cited on the tax lists. His exact death date is not known, but he died before October 19, 1780, when his will was probated in Berks County. His estate was inventoried on June 14, 1781 and again on February 14, 1788 and March 11, 1788. His estate was in the courts in Reading in 1805, when it was found that his estate had never been physically distributed. It was admitted that the administrators of his estate never rendered any account of the estate and the administrator collected monies in his widow's name to a greater amount than the inventory. By November of 1805, the court ordered that his widow be rendered an account of the estate. But there are no final court papers for December 1805 to prove the final rendering and distribution. Johan and Susannah had 8 children: Susanna, David, Maria, Esther, Catharina, Elizabeth, John William Jr. and Joseph Gross.
