James Henderson Newhouse was born Oct. 10, 1831 in Rush County, IN. He was the son of Elijah and Mary "Polly" (Miller) Newhouse. Elijah Newhouse was born 1809 in Washington County, VA. He died Dec. 17, 1845 in Pleasant Grove, Des Moines County, IA. Mary Polly Miller was born Sep 11, 1811 and died Aug. 22, 1838 in Rush County, IN.

James married Emeretta Tibbetts (1833-1891), daughter of Samuel Tibbetts (1804-1890) and Frances Power (1812-1841).

James and Emeretta had the following children:
