Rollin Sidney Martin, 77 of Mount Vernon passed away Thursday, January 21, 2016 at his home. He was born to John "Sid" and Eula (Brooks) Martin in his grandparents' home in Smithfield, Illinois on April 13, 1938. His early childhood was spent at his grandparents' and uncles' farms. Along with his cousins, he was expected not only to attend school, but to do his share of chores to contribute to his family. He attended East Peoria High School before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force at age 17. While stationed in Chateauroux, France, he met the love of his life, Judy Orvis. He always said "she was the prettiest woman I ever met up close". They married there in 1957, had their first two daughters, Karen and Christy before returning to the states in 1960, and daughter Shayla arrived in 1963 in Peoria, Illinois. They were married 47 years, before her passing in 2004. He always did what was necessary to support his family; jobs from pumping gas, being an orderly at the hospital, to selling life insurance for National Life. Moving his family to California, he worked for the Hermann Safe Company, loaded trucks for Pepsi Cola and then back to selling insurance for Allstate. He then moved on to selling high-risk insurance for Yosemite Insurance Co., and was promoted to Vice President for the Northwest Region, and was transferred to Washington State. He and Judy later decided to open a pizza restaurant, Pizza Pete, in Mt. Vernon, and then opened a full-menu restaurant, Addie's Pantry in Everett. After closing the restaurants, they purchased and maintained rental properties, until retirement. He was preceded in death by his father, John "Sid"; wife, Judy; and daughter, Christy. He is survived by his mother, Eula; brother, Michael; daughters, Karen and Shayla; grandchildren, Amy, Tyler, Shaun and Tanya; great grandchildren, Emily, John and Jasmyne. He was a great man, full of humor and wisdom that he passed on to his children and grandchildren. He is so loved and respected by all of his family, and we are grateful for all he taught us and passed on to us. We would like to thank the Cancer Care Center of Mt. Vernon for their compassion and care of our father. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in honor of Rollin to the American Cancer Society, 728 134th St SW, Suite 101, Everett, WA 98204. Graveside service will be Thursday, January 28, 2016, 2:00 p.m. at Mt. Vernon Cemetery, 1200 E Fir St, Mt. Vernon, WA, reception to follow at Kern Funeral Home, 1122 S 3rd St, Mt. Vernon, WA.
