Lewis E. Makay, 92, residing in the Ohio Veterans Home, Sandusky, and formerly of Vermilion, died Tuesday, January 26, 2016, at his residence.

He was born on October 16, 1923 in Lorain, OH.

Lewis was a U.S. Army veteran serving during WWII in the Tank Battalion.

He was the owner and operator of the Vermilion Food Fare and Eagle Market in Vermilion. Lewis always was willing to help many people without hesitation.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, serving as a 4th degree Knight, and loved golfing and bowling.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Theresa (Kalo) Makay; daughters, Donna Makay and Denise Makay both of Vermilion; son, Dale Makay of Vermilion; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Louie Evans; sister, Jean Szabo; and brothers, Bill Makay and John Makay.

A funeral mass will be held Friday, January 29, 2016, at 10:30 A.M. in St. Mary's Catholic Church, 731 Exchange St., Vermilion. Father Ronald Brickner will officiate. A military service will be held Friday at 2:30 P.M. in the Ohio Veterans Home, Giffin Chapel, 3416 Columbus Ave., Sandusky.

Rev. Paul Birmingham will officiate. Burial will be in the Ohio Veterans Home Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association , or to the Ohio Veterans Home.

The family would like to thank the Ohio Veterans Home for all of their special care given to Lewis, and Stein Hospice for letting their loved one transition into the next life with dignity.
