Miriam was the oldest child of Robert and Mary Hartman. She was born at their homestead of W. Main Street, Millville, New Jersey on August 15, 1894. She married her high school sweetheart Dr. William B. Fort and they resided at 147 E. 7th Street, Plainfield, New Jersey all their married life. Miriam was a brilliant business woman and was very good and generous to her sisters and brother. Miriam and Dr. Fort were divorced in about 1950 and Dr. Fort very shortly thereafter married a mutual friend of the family Mrs. Marion Doughty. Several years later Miriam married Robert Thomas. Miriam (affectionately called “Auntie Mim” by her nieces and nephews) and W.B. Fort had 2 children: Dorothy Joan (the oldest) who never married and attended medical school and went into medical research for Sterling Drug Co. in Albany, NY. Donald Allen, her brother, married Marcia Smith in September 1954. Don and a partner conducted a General Electric Appliance business in Jackson, Michigan. (Written by Charles Hartman in 1964)
