John Cruse/Crews, son of Richard Crews and Mary Polly (Toombs) Crews, was born in Virginia in 1814. He married Mary Massey, daughter of John and Nancy (Hastings) Massey, of Caswell County, North Carolina, on December 20, 1839, in Carroll County, Tenn. They were the parents of seven known children, six of whom were born in Carroll Co., Although John and family spelled their name "Cruse," most descendants spell it as "Crews, as did their Virginia ancestors. John died between 1850 and 1860, but the exact date of his death is unknown.
