UNION, S.C. - Mr. Harry Harold Mize, 72, of 177 Carem Road, Union, husband of Doris Jean Clark Mize, died Thursday, January 29, 2004, at 4:15 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a brief illness.

Mr. Mize was born in Union on July 18, 1931, a son of the late Alfred and Leila Elders Mize. He was a member of the Mon Aetna Baptist Church. Mr. Mize was a graduate of Union High School and attended North Greenville College. He was a Veteran of the Korean Conflict and was retired 1st Sgt., 4th. 118th. Infantry, S.C. National Guard- HQ, Union Unit after 34 years of service and was a member of the American Legion Post # 22. Mr. Mize was a self-employed Plumber for 40 years.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters and sons-in-law, Alice Faye Gregory and husband Terry, Betty Jean Loyd and husband Sandy all of Union; a son and daughter-in-law, Daniel O. Mize and wife Sheila of Union; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Dora Mae Callahan of Birmingham, AL and Mary Marguerite "Margie" Proctor and Husband Harry of Jonesville; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Mr. Mize was predeceased by two sisters Ophelia Mize Garner and Lillian Arrwood Crompton, and one brother, Etheridge "Epp" Arrwood.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Saturday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by Rev. Robert Branch and Rev. Allen Quarles. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens will Military Honors.

The following grandsons will serve as active pallbearers: Michael Poole, Travis Poole, Clay Garner, Jon Mize, Adam Mize, Phillip Gregory, Jason Gregory and Derek Loyd.

The following are asked to assemble at the funeral chapel Saturday at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Active and Retired member of the 4th 118th Infantry, S.C. National Guards, Union Unit and Charles Barber, Carl Jennings, Sr., Randy George and David Gregory.

The family is at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Alice and Terry Gregory, 318 W. South St., Union, and will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 1:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. prior to the services.

Memorials may be made to the Upstate Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, 110 South Dean St., Spartanburg, SC 29302; or to the American Legion Post # 22, P.O. Box 25, Union, S.C. 29379.
