John Michael Schumacher was born at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, in Yakima, on December 26, 1950, to John Henry Schumacher and Agnes Matilda Schumacher. John died on January 29, 2016 at Gracelen Terrace in Portland, Oregon.

As a small child he faithfully watched his favorite T.V. program “Uncle Jimmy.” A great thrill for him was when he was selected to take part in one show and be photographed with Uncle Jimmy. The large family reunions on Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, made him beam with joy.

He attended St. Joseph grade school where he learned to become an altar boy. At Marquette-Carol High School, John became a humorous, lively teeny-bopper. He played basketball, joined the pep squad, and participated at the Friday and Saturday high school games. For his first 3 years he and his buddies would cruise down Yakima Ave in his $250 Ford Edsel. In his last year, his drove his prized maroon, 1967 500 Ford Galaxy. In 1965 he went on summer vacation with his brother, Jim, and mother to the Orient. He visited Taiwan, Japan, Okinawa, Hong Kong, Thailand, Hawaii and Alaska.

He met the Air Force recruiters at Y.V.C. where he chose to join the U.S. Air Force. His life was scheduled with basic training, at Lackland airbase in Texas, followed by technical skills at Alamogordo, New Mexico. His final classes were at Ramstein Air Base in Germany. John served in the Vietnam War. After Vietnam, John went to Edwards Air Force Base in California to discover he was haunted by “war images.” This led to a severe case of post traumatic syndrome and sent John to Travis Air Force in Oakland, California. Travis Medical Hospital processed his honorable discharge papers and transferred John to Madigan Air Force Base Hospital in Tacoma, Washington. He then went home and was able to join the family on an Alaskan cruise.

John’s surviving members include Schumachers: Agnes Matilda (mother); Jim J (brother)and spouse Benita; Jim T.
