Darwin was born and raised in Council Bluffs Iowa. He had a special bond with his stepdad, Grant Goehring and was close to his older sisters. Darwin married Ruby Cunningham in 1943 and they had daughter Jacqueline in February of 1944. Darwin was in the US Navy during World War II and a SC 2 cook on the aircraft carrier USS Bunker Hill CV-17 when it was attacked by Japanese Kamikaze planes whose mission was to sink the ship. The Bunker Hill, although crippled, made it back to the San Francisco harbor but Darwin was killed during the fight and was buried at sea. His mother Mary Goehring never got over the loss of her dear son but was grateful that he gave her a granddaughter to carry on his legacy.
