He is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Pat, and his five daughters and son: Darlene Calderhead (Randy) of Hot Springs, Bobbie Allen of San Diego, California, Sherry Bouchard of Horseshoe Bay, Texas, Chris Stein (Larry) of Hot Springs Village, Denise Logan (Bob) of Georgetown, Texas, and Patrick Bouchard (Sara) of Horseshoe Bay, Texas. In addition, he was blessed with 10 grand children, 13 great grand children, and 3 great great grand children.
Bob was born on July 30, 1918 in Houston, Texas to Robert and Elsie Mae Allen. He graduated from Milby High School in Houston, Texas, later attended Allen Academy on a football scholarship, and was briefly a draftsman for Shell Oil in Houston. When World War II broke out, Bob joined the U.S. Army Air Corp, was trained as a B-24 navigator, stationed in England, and flew bombing missions in the European Theater. He also participated in the D-Day bombing campaign.
After the war Bob spent his entire working career in Houston, first as an entrepreneur owning grocery stores and laundromats, before embarking on a successful career marketing Blue Cross-Blue Shield group health insurance to corporations in the greater Houston metro area. He thoroughly enjoyed his work and was honored on numerous occasions as Blue Cross-Blue Shield’s ‘Texas Salesman of the Year’. He also enjoyed & was very active with the downtown Houston Chamber of Commerce where he was honored several years as the outstanding recruiter for attracting new members.
In 1971 Bob and Pat discovered Hot Springs Village and were immediately enamored with the active retirement lifestyle to be offered there. They were “Village Pioneers” as two of its first lot owners, built their home in 1974, and fully retired to the Village in 1982. They were active golfers, dancers, avid travelers, and members of Village United Methodist Church. For several years Bob was a member of the Lion’s Breakfast Club and a Charter Member of VFW Post 10483. His recreational passion was clearly golf and he was a fierce competitor all the way to the 19th hole, at which time he shifted into his charming, bull-slinging personality for which he was widely known in the Village.
Bob truly loved people, possessed a quick wit, and wide spectrum of interests which gave him a genius for engaging people in conversation anywhere, anytime, anyplace. He could make a new best friend in less than five minutes.
Bob’s wide array of interests and varied talents paled in comparison to his love for his family. He loved being with them and created a treasure trove of fun memories, always filled with laughter. He taught everyone important lessons of living life positively and to its fullest, all the way through his passing. He will be dearly missed yet will always be cherished in our hearts, minds & souls.
“Good bye” to our beloved Bob and Dad, until we see you again in heaven in your beautiful resurrection body.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 30, 2016, at Village United Methodist Church, located at 200 Carmona Drive, Hot Springs Village, Arkansas 71909.
