Sacred to the Memory of our Mother, Emily Ann Crowder Wife of John Fain Born October 20, 1820 Died April 8, 1895

Emily Ann Crowder is found in a letter written by her daughter, Eleanor Steele Fain Crigger, to her grand-niece, Sammie Fain Clark Sims. It states, "Mother Emily Ann Crowder was born in Mecklingburg Co. Va in 1820. She was a daughter of Elija Crowder and Rebeckah Loyd (Lloyd). She moved with her parents to TN in the fall or winter of 1827 and 28 and settled in Rutherford Co. where she lived until she married. Elija Crowder was a son of Richard Crowder of Va." It is believed Emily Ann Crowder was one of at least five children.

Emily Ann Crowder married John Fain on 10 Dec 1842 in Rutherford Co., Tn. They were the parents of nine children:
- Rebecca Catherine
- Samuel LaFayette
- Mary Jane - died young
- Martha Elizabeth (Mattie)
- Sibba Dianna
- Elijah David - died young
- Sarah Ann Allison - died young
- Elenor Steele
- Eugenia - burial unknown

Her youngest daughter, Eugenia, b. about 1863, appears in the 1870 and 1880 US Federal Census records. She appears in no other records. We would love to know more about her.

Emily Ann Fain is found in the following US Federal Census records:
- 1850 in Marshall Co., Tn with her spouse and four children
- 1860 in Marshall Co., Tn with her spouse and five children
- 1870 in Mooresville, Marshall Co., Tn with her spouse and five children
- 1880 in Marshall Co., Tn with her spouse and four kids
- 1900 in Marshall Co., Tn widowed, with her two unmarried daughters, Sibbie and Mattie, census lists her as the parent of nine children, six still living

In her memoirs, Sammie Clark Sims writes about as a young child visiting the home of her paternal grandparents, sometime after the death of her grandfather, John Fain. In this document Sammie refers to her grandmother as Elizabeth Fain. "The home was 13 miles from Lewisburg and was made of logs. One section had two rooms, up two-down two, with two staircases. The rooms were very large, so large that even though one of them had two double beds, chests of drawers and a large fireplace there was still room for chairs to seat about six people. Across an open, but roofed dog trot, was a huge kitchen with a loom for weaving in one corner. There was a small wood burning cook stove, but the fireplace was also used for cooking. ...Another thing I remember was the well where we drew water in a long tin bucket that resembled a section of gutter downspout. And near the well was a corn crib, where my brother, Marshall, and I loved to play. On the other side of the house was the vegetable garden, cut in both directions by a brick path lined with flowers."

Emily Ann Crowder Fain's photo was handed down from her son, S.L Fain to great granddaughter Sammie Fain Clark Sims, to great, great, great granddaughter.

Emily Ann Crowder is found in the book "Tombstone Inscriptions of Marshall Co., TN.," by Ralph D. Whitesell, listed as buried in Olds Cemetery.
