He served in the Army. He was worked as a heavy equipment operator. He obtained his associate degree in surveying from Southwestern Community College.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Kay (Prince) Ammons; two sons, Aaron Carnell (Olivia) and John Brent (Natalie) Ammons; two grandchildren, Cooper William, and Reese Olivia; and two sisters Helen (Mike) Bryson and Kathleen Ensley. Carnell loved hunting, running dogs, guns, and dancing as a member of a clogging team. He was a member and deacon of Oak Ridge Baptist Church, and loved singing Gospel music. He loved his grandchildren, and was always ready and willing to lend a hand to help friends who needed help.
The funeral will be held 3:00 pm on Tuesday, January 26 at Appalachian Funeral Services, 165 Skyland Drive, Sylva, NC. Burial will follow in MIddleton Cemetery, Tuckasegee. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, 2 hours prior to service at the funeral home.
