Paul was a proud graduate of the University of Wisconsin – Platteville and was delighted when his son, Patrick, chose to attend his alma mater. Paul honorably served in combat in the Korean War, earning three bronze stars for his distinguished service. The only thing he loved more than telling the story of how he met his wife, Janet Kiley, was Jan herself.
Paul was a proud father and grandfather. Paul was known by many as the mailman for downtown Madison. He took pride in his job and was a dedicated union member. He had an avid love of news and politics and was a lifelong Democrat. Win or lose, he was Notre Dame's biggest fan. Paul was affectionately known as "Daddy Paul" by the many kids that he and Jan babysat throughout the years; even as they grew up, they would continue to call him "Daddy Paul" when they saw him at Miller's. Paul had great empathy and couldn't bear to see people in need, giving money to the homeless, often sharing his lunch or taking the time to visit with people on his route. Paul had his own style. Always an Old Spice man, in the last year, he would only wear his favorite scent, Old Spice Swagger.
Paul was preceded in death by his father and mother; beloved son, Paul "P.J." McGuire; nine brothers; and three sisters.
He is survived by sisters, Eileen and Patricia; his wife of fifty years, Jan; daughter, Paula McGuire; son, Patrick (Ellen) McGuire; daughter-in-law, Becky McGuire; granddaughters, Ashley, Lauren, Olivia and Alison McGuire; honorary grandchildren, Amanda, Tyler and Kirk Blasdel; and dear family friends, Bob and Shari Blasdel.
