Robert L. Hollingsworth, 74, of 507 E. Jackson St. Columbia City, long-time local funeral director and civic leader, died Monday, April 29, at 4:55 p.m. at Whitley County Memorial Hospital. He had been ill several months.
Mr. Hollingsworth was born March 19, 1917, in Howard County, a son of William and Martha Ann Freeman Hollingsworth. He graduated from Kokomo High School in 1935, and was married to Lucille Rose in Lafayette on Dec. 31, 1936.
He attended the Indiana Institute of Mortuary Science in Indianapolis and moved to Columbia City in 1937 after graduation. He later lived in Noblesville for four years before returning to Columbia City.
Mr. Hollingsworth served as an embalmer and funeral director all his life. The Hollingsworth Memorial Chapel in Columbia City was established in 1955.
He was a member of the Columbia City United Methodist Church, Columbia City Elks Lodge 1417, Columbia City Lodge 189 F & AM, Columbia City Order of Eastern Star 65, the Huntington York Rite bodies, and served as ambassador of the Mizpah Temple in Fort Wayne where he was a member of the wills and bequeaths committee and the membership committee.
He was a charter member of the Whitley County Shrine Club, serving the group as president and secretary for many years.
Mr. Hollingsworth contributed to the community as a past president of Columbia City Old Settlers Association and on the advisory board of Whitley County Civil Defense. He was a charter member and past president of the Columbia City Kiwanis Club and a past Lt.governor of the Indiana District of Kiwanis.
His professional memberships included the Indiana Funeral Director's Association and the National Funeral Director's Association.
Surviving are his wife Lucille Rose; daughters, Mrs.Robert(Cynthia)Flint of Great Falls, Va.,Mrs. Stephen(Ann)Hamilton of Cary, Ill., and Janeal Wilson of Fort Wayne. There are seven grandchildren.
A son Robert Hollingsworth Jr. died in 1968. Twelve brothers and sisters are deceased.
