U.S. Diplomat; Environmentalist. One of four sons born to famed prison reformer Thomas Mott Osborne and his wife, the former Alice Devens, Lithgow Osborne is best known for his work in the field of international diplomacy, and in 1944-46 served as U.S. Ambassador to Norway, among other notable achievements. His public service at home was also significant, however, and as a member of a New York State Commission regulating the use of public lands in the 1930's, he was instrumental in keeping key areas of the Adirondacks and the Catskills out of the hands of developers. A member of a prominent American family, he was the grandson of manufacturer David M. Osborne and Women's Suffrage activist Eliza Wright Osborne, also buried here, along with his parents and brothers Robert and Charles, a former mayor of Auburn. Mr. Osborne was interred beside his wife Lillie, Countess Raben-Levetzau, who predeceased him.
