James Allen Merrick was born on December 5, 1938 in Jackson County, Iowa to Hiram Henry and Florence Bell (Sutton) Merrick. He attended New Castle Country School and graduated from Maquoketa High School in 1957 where he participated in Football and Track. He held the 100 yard dash record at MHS until 2009 and still holds the 220 yard dash record. Both records were obtained while running on a cinder track. He later attended SCI in Ames to further his education. He married Patricia R. "Pat" Kingsley on August 21, 1960 in Maquoketa, Iowa and to this union two children were born: James and Kathy.

In his early years, Jim had worked at the lumber yard, Clinton Engines, and for the Maquoketa Police Department from 1963 to 1966. He then worked for the DOT for a short time, and in 1969 began working for the Jackson County Engineering (18 years) and Maintenance Department (11 years) until retirement in 1998.

Jim was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Maquoketa, Coronado Car Club, and had served on the Maquoketa City Council for several years. He loved collecting antique cars and model trains.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Patricia on September 9, 1996, and a brother William "Bill" Merrick.
