LANCASTER - Pastor Jim was not a stuffy sort of man.
He liked barbecues and loved fishing, and sometimes broke into song from the pulpit at Lancaster United Methodist Church.

He was a husband, a father, an ecclesiastical leader, a friend.

Rev. James Ledgerwood was found dead in his home Aug. 9 at 64.

Ledgerwood's wife, Rev. Kathy Ledgerwood, said he appeared to have been getting ready for bed when he suddenly died of natural causes. She was out of town at a conference at the time.

Although Ledgerwood grew up in the Methodist church, the ministry wasn't always his goal.

He attended Reseda High School near his boyhood home in the San Fernando Valley and received degrees in biology and chemistry from California Western University in San Diego in 1964.

Then, his wife said, he received a call from God.

Three years later, he graduated with a master of divinity degree from Garret Evangelical Theological School at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.

He spent years with churches in various areas of California and also worked in Tucson and Winslow, Ariz.

Ledgerwood served in Hawaii for seven years before his appointment to Lancaster in July 1999.

About three years ago, Ledgerwood decided his congregation needed more room to mingle and began renovations to add an extended foyer to the building.

The dust finally had settled and the landscaping only recently had been finished as members of the congregation set up a memorial table last week in honor of their fallen leader. It was covered with candles, Ledgerwood's stole, and a sign: "Our Pastor, our friend." Ledgerwood's death marks the second time this month a member of the congregation has passed away. Rev. Richard Stanley died at 90 years old on Sept. 1.

Ledgerwood is survived by his wife and daughter, Tiffany, both of Lancaster. He also has a son, Jordan, who lives in Honolulu, Hawaii.

A public "service of memory and celebration" will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Lancaster United Methodist Church, 918 West Avenue J.

Visitation has been scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Joshua Memorial Park and Mortuary at 808 East Lancaster Blvd.

Memorial contributions may be made directly to The Ledgerwood Family Fund through the Antelope Valley Bank.
