"BUEL SHERMAN DIES BENEATH ENGINE WHEELS.
Popular Railroad Man Badly Mangled When Foot Slipped.
His two legs and left hand completely severed, Buel M. Sherman, 56, Southern Pacific switchman, died Sunday afternoon at 3:25 at the Watsonville hospital after having slipped under the monstrous wheels of a railroad engine at the Watsonville Junction while trying to disconnect two freight cars. The tragedy occurred at 2 o’clock.
Sherman was conscious until about five minutes before he died.
It is understood Sherman was about to disconnect two freight cars when in some manner he slipped from his hold on one of the cars and fell under a passing engine.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Anna Sherman; by three stepsons, Merrill [Merle] “Hick” Russell of Watsonville, Ellis Russell of Portland, and Theodore Russell of Roseburg, Oregon, and one stepdaughter, Mrs. Lois Moore of Ashland, Oregon.
An inquest into his death will be held this morning at 10 o’clock at Mehl’s funeral home in Watsonville with Coroner Pat Freeman officiating.
The funeral will be held from Mehl’s this afternoon at 2 o’clock with burial in the family plot in the Pajaro Valley Memorial park.
Sherman is believed to have had a premonition of death for he told friends Sunday morning he wished he didn’t have to go to work that day. However, he was of a cheerful disposition and in the best of health when he reported for work.
He was so horribly mangled that nothing could be done to save his life. The left hand was amputated, the right leg a few inches above the ankle, the left leg just above the hip, and right arm and forearm crushed. He also suffered scalp wounds, but the fatal injuries were in his limbs.
This is the second fatal accident at the Watsonville Junction Southern Pacific yards within the last three weeks.
The other death was that of William Richardson, a 25-year-old railroad fireman from Phoenix, on July 20. He was killed when a string of gondolas collided with an engine on which Richardson was working as a fireman after he is said by Southern Pacific employees to have given the wrong signal to the engineer. He was crushed in his cab and then scalded by broken steam pipes."
Marriages:
1) Etta Bacon 1911 div.
2) Anna (Kingsley) Russill 1924
Note: Buel and his first wife Etta divorced. His second wife Anna was previously married to and divorced in 1923 from Frank Ellsworth Russill (1876-1952) (often misspelled Russell as in the newspaper notice above). Buel Sherman m. "Anna Russill alias Anna Russell" in 1924 (Santa Cruz County marriage index).
