Josef Bauer was born in Viehbach on August 6, 1936. He was the youngest of 8 children of Jakob Bauer (1888-1968) and Klara Mayr (1892-1965). His father ran a lemonade business. In the early 1950s after finishing his studies as an engineer he travelled through almost every country around the Mediterranian Sea with his brother Franz and a friend. In Istanbul, he said he got hooked on his first cigarette (thanks to Franz) and he became a chain smoker the rest of his life. He married Maria Luthe in Cologne in 1960 while visiting his sister Klara. After the engagement he built a house in Viehbach for his future wife. Josef and Maria married in Cologne on August 6, 1960. They lived in the house in Viehbach for over 40 years. They had 2 children. He also founded an air-conditioning business in Viehbach (Bauer-Gerätebau, 1967 - 2004). For years he and his family would spend the summer on boat trips going down the Danube River, sometimes as far as the Black Sea Delta in Romania. One of his favorite vacation spots was a lonely cabin called 'Villibach' on the Croatian island of Cres. During the Yugoslav Wars in the 1990s, Joseph would often travel into dangerous areas of Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia. In 2004 Joseph sold the business, retired and did travelling across Eastern Europe in his camping van. He fell ill and died in Osijek, Croatia in February 2007 while travelling alone. His body was transported back to Germany and was buried at the village cemetery in Viehbach.
