AT REST
A Long and Useful Life Ended Here – A Glorious Inheretance Beyond.
This morning at one o’clock the sweet, pure spirit of mother Lucy Mendenhall passed out of its early tenement and entered the Celestial Kingdom to join the loved companion who had preceded her. The deceased was born, September 5th, 1825, in Allegany county, New York, her maiden name being Lucy W. Lincoln. At the age of two years, she moved with her parents to Hancock county, Illinois from which place the family moved to St. Clair county, Missouri, where she was married in January 1849 to Nathan Mendenhall. To that union, nine children were born, five of whom are living, four in Canadian county and one, the eldest son, in Missouri. Her life companion died the tenth day of last December and two weeks ago yesterday she came here to visit her children and from the time of her arrival had been with her daughter, Mrs. Laura Talbot, at the family home 403 west Wade street.
Mother Mendenhall had been in feeble health for several years, but was apparently feeling better in her general health until twenty-four hours before her death when she was confined to her bed but hopes were entertained that she would soon recover. Her loving, faithful daughter was caring for her last night and at the earnest pleading of her mother, laid down upon the bed just after midnight and when she awoke at one o’clock, mother had gone home to the universal father and upon the dear face were the evidence of peaceful happy sleep in which there is perfect rest.
The remains will be taken to her home in Appleton City, Missouri, on this evening’s train accompanied by her eldest daughter, Mrs. W.H. Hutchison and her husband. The funeral services will occur at Appleton City, where she has lived for many years and is loved by every acquaintance.
