John Ross Nichols was born on 16 February 1891 in Andrews, North Carolina, the son of Larkin C. Nichols (1845-1931) & Eliza Jane Sharp Nichols (1855-1924). He was married to Jessie Estella McHan (1892-1975) about 1915. They had a son and a daughter. He worked as a lumberman and hotel operator. He was widowed in 1975. He died on 11 March 1988 in Waynesville, NC at the age of 97. He was interred at Swain Memorial Park.
