She died Saturday, May 22, 1999, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen.
Helen T. Borwell was born Aug. 4, 1913, to Joseph and Ella (Bahl) Borwell on the Borwell homestead northwest of Conde. She was raised and educated at Conde, where she graduated in 1930. She attended Northern Normal and Industrial School at Aberdeen, where she earned her teaching certificate. She taught many years in rural schools and at the Conde School.
Helen married Melvin Rossow on Feb. 22, 1936, at Aberdeen and lived on the Rossow farm until 1937, when they moved to Minnesota. In 1946, they moved back to South Dakota to farm near Stratford, where they lived for four years and then moved back to Conde. She taught piano lessons until she returned to teaching. In 1961, they moved to a farm near Conde. They moved back into Conde in 1967, where she lived since.
She was a member of the Conde Civic Development Association and the Senior Citizens. She was also a member of the Conde United Methodist Church, where she was the organist for 40 years and was a Sunday school and Bible school teacher. She had been a local and district officer for the United Methodist Women. She was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a member of the Help One Another Extension Club, the King’s Daughters and Sons and the Redfield Area Retired Teachers Association. She had been a correspondent for the Conde, Groton, and Redfield weekly newspapers.
She enjoyed organ music, and playing bridge.
Survivors include her husband of Conde; one son, Robert (Mavis) Rossow of Conde; one daughter Janet Rossow of Conde; one sister, Lorraine Bebo of Estherville, Iowa; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one sister and one half sister.
Casketbearers will be Larry Bebo, Dennis Rossow, John Joy, Scott Rossow, Danny Miles and David Haider.
