Garland Mixon Bastin was a Kentucky farmer, auctioneer, educator, and businessman. He was the son of Alfred Amos Bastin and Launa Fancher Bastin. He devoted his life to the development of the Kentucky beef cattle industry and the improvement of the industry. He was also an outstanding auctioneer and served as a role model to many young auctioneers.
Raised on a small farm in Hart County near the Wickerville community, Bastin attributed much of his appreciation for people and his understanding of human nature to the values learned from his parents and his humble upbringing. Bastin was an active 4-H member and learned about the University of Kentucky through 4-H. He graduated from UK in 1945 with a bachelor's degree in agriculture and began a long and distinguished career with UK and the Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service.
During his 32-year career, Bastin served as assistant county extension agent in Logan County, supervisor of the UK dairy herd, extension dairyman in charge of 4-H work, extension district leader, agriculture program specialist , agriculture programs acting chairman, 4-H program specialist, animal science area extension director and extension specialist . When a program needed a shot of enthusiasm and a leader with special people and organizational skills, Bastin was the person for the job. He was a great advocate and ambassador for the dairy industry and agriculture.
When he worked with 4-H youth, Bastin convinced many to stretch beyond the status quo, to go the extra mile and to be productive and caring human beings. Bastin had a similar impact in adult extension work. By example, Bastin set the standard in work ethic, honesty and integrity.
Bastin retired in 1978 and immediately was tapped by Gov. Julian Carroll to be the Governor's Advocate for Agriculture. He later spent two years organizing the XIV International Grassland Congress, which was held in Lexington, and served four years as executive director of the Kentucky Beef Cattle Association. Bastin worked with the Kentucky State Fair for 50 years and was general superintendent of the North American International Livestock Exposition for 27 years.
He volunteered with Alzheimer's patients, the community kitchen, The Gideons International and was an officer in the local chapter of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. Bastin was a dynamic auctioneer and was always willing to help with charity auctions and active in his church.
Bastin made many exceptional contributions to Kentuckians. He empowered hundreds to believe in themselves and the things they could accomplish. His enthusiasm was infectious. His ability to motivate his fellow man was fantastic. The zeal for public service he exhibited while serving the people of Kentucky resulted in strong bonds between Bastin and thousands of Kentuckians

Bastin has also been honored as Dairy Honor Guest by the Dairy Section of the UK Animal and Food Sciences Department, inducted into the UK Animal and Food Sciences Hall of Fame, honored as Man of the Year in Kentucky Agriculture by the Agricultural Communicators of Kentucky, and he received the Meritorious Service Award and the National Certificate of Recognition from Epsilon Sigma Phi. In 1993, UK awarded him the Sullivan Medallion, one of the highest honors given by the university.

He was an individual with the highest integrity who truly loved young people.
