Liberty was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) days after her fifth birthday. Within two weeks of diagnosis, she could no longer walk/move, talk, or swallow. She stayed locked-in like this until she died.

Liberty was an amazing little girl. She loved space, rainbows, stars, hearts, and her little sister. Here is her obituary:

"After an all-too-short battle with brain stem cancer Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), Liberty Maya Arnold-Simon, 5, passed away at home in Clinton, early Sunday, Dec. 20. She was the firstborn child of Sara and William “Bill” Simon, born on Aug. 22, 2010. She started her life in her mother’s hometown of Burlington, and moved to Clinton in March 2012.

Liberty loved participating in all that Clinton has to offer a little girl: Going to preschool at Clinton High School and then Clinton Elementary School, swimming underwater at the state pool, dancing at the block dances, and was looking forward to kindergarten and Girl Scouts, which she did get to attend while ill. She loved active play, especially on her playset. Liberty made friends with everyone everywhere she went. Liberty loved space, Hello Kitty, rainbows, butterflies, hearts, giraffes (her favorite zoo animal), maps, airplanes, the beach, nose kisses, fistbump sparkles, “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star,” all sorts of food, but especially Chinese food, maps and selfies. When she grew up, she wanted to be a lifeguard at the state pool before becoming a space midwife. She wanted to have four children.

Other than her parents, Liberty is survived by her little sister, Verity Arnold-Simon; her maternal grandparents, Richard and Karen Arnold; her paternal grandparents, Donna Purtell and Joseph Simon; her maternal great-grandmother, Ann Zucker; aunts Sarah and Sharon Simon; her godparents, Alison Yaker and Aidan Skinner; and a multitude of family and friends.

The burial will take place at the Reservoir Pines Cemetery on Route 110 on Wednesday, Dec. 23, at 1 p.m., with a police procession to be followed by a memorial service at the Clinton Town Hall from 4 to 6 p.m. and a further celebration of Liberty’s life to happen later. The family requests those attending wear rainbow colors since that was Liberty’s favorite color. The family also asks that those with any memories of Liberty to always express those to them whenever possible to honor her life."
