Catherine and her older sister were the granddaughters of Vice President Schuyler Colfax. Catherine was named for her mother and sister Ellen was named for their Grandmother Ellen Wade Colfax. Ellen was born June 17, 1901 and died October 6. 1904 at age 3 years. They have twin headstones as the little girls died a day apart and were buried side by side.
