Opera Singer. Born Margot Maria Strauss, she studied music in Essen, though her studies were interrupted by World War II. After graduation in 1950, she had accepted a position with the Essen Opera, but never appeared as she married and moved to Chile with her new husband. She appeared in many opera productions in South America, but was divorced in 1954 and returned to Germany. She married Til Kewe after her return and took a brief break from her career to have two children. In 1957, she took a longterm position at the Bern Opera, where she met Fritz Janota, a meeting which would later have tragic results. Eventually they fell in love, though they were both married to others, and committed suicide together in 1973. Her best known work may have been the film and cast album of d'Albert's opera "Tiefland" and her recording of Alban Berg's "Wozzeck." Her performance of the role of Marie is considered the definitive version by many opera critics.
