Clemens Named to VPI Staff
Paul F. Clemens of Rensselaer, a member of Siena College's first graduating class in 1941, has been appointed assistant professor of methematics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute.
Clemens who attented Siena on a Knights of Columbus scholarship, was valedictorian, president of the mathematics club and a member of the Physics honor society and Alpha Kappa Alpha.
Clemens received his Master's degree from New York State Teachers College and did graduate work at Pittsburgh University. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul F. Clemens, 21 Green St., Rensselaer.

Paul Clemens Jr., valedictorian of Siena College's first class
BLACKSBURG, Va. - Services will be held today for Paul F. Clemens Jr., 70, of Harding Avenue, a native of Albany, N.Y., who died Tuesday [Oct. 15] at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany after a short illness.
Mr. Clemens moved to Virginia 35 years ago.
He was a valedictorian in 1937 of the first graduating class of St. John's Academy in Rensselaer, N.Y. He also was valedictorian in 1941 of the first graduating class of Siena College in lousonville, N.Y. Mr. Clemens later earned a master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh. After he served in the Army, he earned a degree in education from the State University of New York at Albany.
For eight years, Mr. Clemens was a mathematics professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. After moving to Virginia, he taught in the same capacity for 30 years at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, retiring in 1984.
Survivors include two nephews, Peter H. Clemens of Rensselaer and Gregory P. Clemens of Colonie, N.Y.
The service will be held a 9 a.m. Monday [Oct. 21] at the W.J. Lyons Funeral Home, 1700 Washington Ave., Rensselaer, and at 10 a.m. at St. John's Church, Rensselaer. Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, East Greenbush, N.Y.
Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. tomorrow [Oct. 20] at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society Rensselaer County Unit, 7 State St., Troy, 12180; or the American Lung Association of New York State, 8 Mountainview Ave., Colonie.
