Sometimes known as 'the Irishman' or 'the Planter', James Butler came to Connecticut in the year 1653 "but removed to Lancaster, Mass., (before 1659) where he received a grant of a halfe home lott in 1663, and his name appears in the tax lists of that town" Lancaster was settled as Nashaway first, and then it was incorporated as Lancaster in 1653, the oldest town in Worcester County, Massachusetts. Also, his name appears on the list of Ralph Houghton who "laid out the second edition of meadow in February of 1659." He received a "halfe home lott", 10 acres of upland, 20 acres of intervale and "other accommodations suitable to his estate"

In 1654, he married a woman named Martha, whose surname has not been learned. She evidently died, as he married again in 1677 to Mary Andrews (1639-about 1737). They had six children. They were James Butler II, Martha Butler, Simon Butler (perhaps), Deacon John Butler, Mary Butler, Eleanor Butler Hinds (who was born after her father's death, but raised by step-father, John Hinds).

In 1675, after several Indian Massacres following the outbreak of King Phillip's war, he took his family and left for Woburn, Massachusetts. By 1679, he had moved to Billerica, Massachusetts.

James Butler, in 1664, received from Rebecca Joslin, widow of Thomas, certain land east of Still River. (in Lancaster) The above lands, recorded 1666, are upon the east slope of Wataquadock, and there his son James lived after the massacre, the elder James Butler dying March 19, 1681, and his widow, Mary, marrying John
Hinds.

In the town's earliest record book, his death is reported. "James Butler, Senr, Irishman, dyed 20 .01.81." (20 March 1681) As he is reported to have died in Billerica, it is assumed that he is buried there.

By a family tree accepted by the Butler Society, his father was James Butler of Moyally born and died, 1586-1633 Ballynenoddagh, Ardmayle, Tipperary, Ireland
and his mother, Eleanor Fitzgerald 1590 born in Dromana, Waterford, Ireland and died in 1648 Ballynenoddagh, Ardmayle, Tipperary, Ireland.
He had a sister, Ellen, born 1623, who married Edmond Fanning in Ireland in 1649 and they came to New London, Connecticut in 1653.
