Anthropologist. William S. Pollitzer was a prominent, award winning anthropology professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He earned his PhD at Columbia University. A physical (biological) anthropologist, he was past president of both the American Association of Physical Anthropologists and the Human Biology Council. Pollitzer published almost one hundred articles, most of them dealing with Native American, African American, or triracial populations and their history and admixture. One of his most famous books was The Gullah People and Their African Heritage. The William S. Pollitzer Prize in Anthropology was named for him.
