Alta only achieved a sixth grade education before she married horseman Fred P. Thompson in 1909 when she was 16 and he was 28. She gave birth in 1910 to a daughter, Eva May, and she had son Lyman Leroy Thompson in 1914. She lived a long life, though it was hard.

In 1930, Alta got a job as a machine operator in an overall (pants factory in Galesburg, and was living with her son. They'd taken in a lodger to help pay the bills. Her husband wasn't listed at home (he may have been in the war, or they separated?) but he didn't die until the following year.
