Helen Elizabeth Gibson
1917 - 2006
Helen Elizabeth Gibson was welcomed into Heaven on her 89th birthday, September 18, 2006. She was born in Lodi, California to Roswell and Vivian Jett. She is survived by her younger brother, Robert Eugene Jett. "Liz" remembered growing up in the heartland of California, playing with her brother, enjoying nature, and playing softball. In 1939, Liz was in her third year of college when she met Norman Arthur Gibson (d. 1998), while working a summer job in a cannery. Norman's persistent teasing and untying of "Liz's" apron strings lead to an everlasting love. They were married May 2, 1940. Elizabeth is survived by two sons, Gary and Richard and their wives, Edith Gibson and Gracie Gibson; as well as her very blessed grandchildren, Alisa Gibson, Christopher Johnston and his wife, Jody; and their boys, Jacob and Jassen Oliver; Catie Gibson and Andrew and Amanda (Gibson) Chi. During her retirement years Liz and Norm enjoyed going to the coast to race dune buggies. She and Norman devoted their entire lives to suppporting the fruit of their love, their children and grandchildren. Elizabeth was born to be a mother and a grandmother. She insisted that everyone she met call her "Grandma." She lovingly sewed beautiful clothes for many special occasions and painting ceramics. Elizabeth made it her goal to enjoy life and continued to be there for every graduation, wedding, and important event. She never missed an opportunity to express gratitude, love, and pride to her family. After having a massive heart attack on September 7, 2006, she peacefully stayed alive for 11 days, to be able to say "Thank you" and "I love you" to her loved ones one last time. She was laughing and appreciating every mement of her life, down to her last breath. A celebration of "Grandma's" life will take place on Sunday, September 24th. Viewing/Vigil will be from 2-8 p.m. at Greenlawn Mortuary, 3700 River Blvd., with a Rosary at 6:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held Monday, September 25th, 1:30 p.m., at St. Philip the Apostle Church, 7100 Stockdale Hwy.
