Doris Jean Mathias Helsel, 86, of Hudson, Ohio, died June 30, 2014. She was born on December 28, 1927 in Akron, Ohio to the late Raleigh S. and Mildred (Epperson) Mathias.

She graduated from East High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1950 from Akron University (The University of Akron) where she was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.

In her younger years, Doris was Assistant Dean of Women at The University of Akron and then was employed by the CIA. She was also an instructor and the head of the preschool program at Lake Erie College in the 1960s. Later on, Doris served as a substitute teacher for the Middletown, Ohio Public Schools and worked for the Head Start Program. More recently she was a sales representative for the Love Furniture Company in Tallmadge. Also, for a number of years after retirement, Doris and her sister, Gerry shared an estate sale business.

She married her husband, Dale Forest Helsel on August 19, 1951 at the Goodyear Heights Methodist Church. During their long marriage Doris and Dale lived in a number of locations, including Berkeley, CA; Arlington, VA; Bedford, OH; Bellefonte, PA; Painesville, OH; and Middletown, OH, before relocating to the Akron area in the late 1980s.

Doris was active in the community as a member of AAUW (American Association of University Women), the League of Women Voters, and attended Wedgewood United Methodist Church. Doris also had an important walk-on role in the 1964 movie "One Potato, Two Potato" and loved collecting and selling antiques, playing cards, listening to music and attending concerts. She had a particularly effective strategy for entering successful bids at auctions.

Her parents and her sisters; Hank (Jack) Christie and Gerry (Thomas) Gentry preceded her in death.
