Mr. Clarence L. Achterhoff, age 92, loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle, passed away early Thursday, September 2, 2010 at the Poppen Residence. Mr. Achterhoff was born March 13, 1918 to Louis K. and Grace (Toppen) Achterhoff in Muskegon and was a life long resident of the area.

He served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps Eastern Flying Training Command and became a Captain in the Air Force during World War II. Earlier in his military career, he taught recruits at Camp Shelby, in Biloxi, MS.

On June 20, 1944 he married the former Genevieve Olsen and she preceded him in death on January 6, 1994. He attended the Berean Church with his family until 1929. Since then Clarence has been a member of Bethany Christian Reformed Church where he served as Deacon, Elder and was Chairman of the Properties Committee.

He was owner and operator of C.L. Achterhoff Realty and prior to that owner and operator of Quality Beverage. Clare started his business career at Coca Cola Bottling of Muskegon where he became Vice President. He was a long time member of the Muskegon Real Estate Board where he had served two years as president. He also held the longest membership at the Muskegon Rotary Club, serving since 1949; was active in the Michigan Association of Realtors and the Michigan Soft Drink Bottlers Association, where he served as secretary for many years. He was a member of The Greater Muskegon Jaycees and the U.S. 31 Corridor Association.

Clare was a kind and gentle man with a fine sense of humor who will be dearly missed by his children, Louise (Robert) Jewell of North Muskegon, Jane (James) Boyle, of North Muskegon, Thomas (Linda) Achterhoff of Norton Shores; his grandchildren, Marni Achterhoff, Keri (John) Missimer, Kimberly (Darek) Senkow, Michael (Lindsey) Boyle, Matthew Boyle, Susan Bergmans, and Thomas (Carri) Jewell; his great-grandchildren, Trevor, Courtney, Abbie, Andrew, Jordan, and Ross; his special friend, Grace Eckman; and his many nieces and nephews. Clarence was also preceded in death by his son, David Paul Achterhoff; 3 brothers, John R. Achterhoff, Jay W. Achterhoff and Rolland H. Achterhoff.

Funeral Service will be held 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at Bethany Christian Reformed Church, 1105 Terrace St., with Rev. David Sieplinga officiating. Burial will be in Restlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-5 P.M. Sunday, September 5, 2010 at The Sytsema Chapel, Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 737 Apple Avenue 231 726-5210.
