Aged Civic And Charity Worker Passed Away
Lydia E. Gillespie, 88, 1831 North A St. died at her home about 8 o'clock last night. Death was due to complications from old age.
Mrs. Gillespie was the widow of the late Mike Gillespie, Civil War veteran.
She was one of Elwood's most prominent women in the early history of Elwood and was very active in the civic and church affairs during the early founding of the city.
Mrs. Gillespie had attended the funeral of her last surviving sister last Thursday.
She was a past matron of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the O. A. R. Circle. She was a member of the Christian Church.
The deceased was the sister of the late Dale Crittenberger, of the Anderson Bulletin.
Mrs. Gillespie was born in Shenandoah Valley, Va., Nov. 19, 1852 and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Crittenberger.
She married Mike Gillespie in 1879. Two children were born to them, Chase D. Gillespie, who died some time ago and a daughter, Mrs. Mary Maines who resides at home.
The body was taken to the York Memorial chapel on South Anderson St., and will be returned to the home tonight Funeral services will be held at the home Thursday morning at 10 o'clock with Rev. D. D. McColl, pastor of the East Main Street Christian Church, in charge. Interment will be made in the mausoleum at the City cemetery beside the body of her husband.
