"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience,
kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control..." Galatians 5:22, 23. These words perfectly apply to the life of Madie Barrow. Madie move with her family from Louisiana to Texas in 1911 and grew up on a farm north of West Columbia, TX where she was surrounded by a special family of love, humor, hard work and dedication to the Lord. She graduated from West Columbia High School in 1926, attended Mary Hardin Baylor, began her teaching career at Cottonwood, TX and married Melvin in 1929. After having 3 children, she earned her B.S. and M.ED. from the University of Houston by attending classes in the
summer and on weekends. She taught school for 38 years and was an active member in the First Baptist Church of Brazoria, TX where she worked in Sunday School for over 60 years. She was a member of the Texas State Teachers Association, local TSTA officer and a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, honorary teachers organization. A defining moment in her family's life happened when her son, Bill became injured in a trampoline accident in 1957. In addition to all the duties previously mentioned, she became head nurse for a quadriplegic son. She and Melvin took care of him for over 40 years as he overcame his injury. She played a major role in his accomplishments by giving unwavering love, never once complaining and maintaining her spiritual emphasis. She has received many accolades, some of which are local Teacher of the Year, 1974 Texas Mother of the
Year, numerous church recognitions and naming of Barrow Elementary in Brazoria for her and Melvin. It was once written that "her definition of success would be helping others to succeed." Her deep love for God and for her fellow man was reflected in all her daily activities and relationships. She lived her motto, "I will do the best I can with what I have, each day, for the sake for Jesus."
