Since coming to Calgary from Ontario 27 years ago, W. J. Gourley, 614 Sixth avenue west, who was found dead in his garage on November 5, was in business at different times. He operated a blacksmith shop on Eighth avenue between Second and Third street east. He was with the Ford agency for Alberta, in 1908. He had the Pioneer Carriage business. Of late years he was in the radio business and working in the Hay and Harding shop.
In 1908 Mr. Gourley bought a six-cylinder Ford in Detroit, intending to drive back to Calgary. The car was quite a curiosity at that time. In Winnipeg he raced with Barney Oldfield, winning second and third prizes. The car was shipped to Calgary from Regina, owing to impassable roads.
