Elmer Walter Koerber, Jr., age 80, of New Holstein, died on Monday, February 29, 2016 at the Calumet Medical Center in Chilton. He was born August 17, 1935 in Milwaukee, son of the late Elmer & Lillian (Acker) Koerber.

Elmer grew up working with his family on their farm and when he was old enough, he began to combine the fields at harvest time. Unknown to him, a young girl by the name of Jo Anne M. Van Beek sat near by watching as he tended to the fields. As time moved on and they became friends, they eventually fell in love with each other and were married on July 30, 1955 in Milwaukee. They were the picture of a story book love. Elmer & Jo Anne lived life together in partnership as they, together, built their lives, their family and their home. After 60 years of marriage, Jo Anne preceded him in death on January 25, 2016.

During their lifetime, they owned and operated Elmer’s Little Forest Resort in Minocqua and loved traveling together throughout the country having traveled to 49 of the 50 United States. They especially enjoyed their winter months spent in Mississippi and where they belonged to the Lutheran Church of the Pines in Waveland, MS. It was this church where Elmer volunteered as the parish carpenter fashioning much of the woodwork throughout the church.

Even with a great sense of humor, Elmer was a God fearing, Bible loving man who liked to think he followed in Jesus’ footsteps as a carpenter who lived a simple life. One of his first projects was when he helped a local farmer build a barn. He owned and operated M to M Builders and proudly framed hundreds of homes, eventually working side by side with his son, Quent who eventually assumed the reigns of the business in 1987.

Through determination and self discipline, there was nothing Elmer couldn’t do. When a project didn’t quite work the way it was supposed to, he would find a way to “Elmerize” it in order to make things go together. It was a lesson he instilled upon his children as well; they, too, have “Elmered” things and events in their lives because of the opportunities Elmer gave to teach his children.

In his free time, Elmer enjoyed the great outdoors, especially time spent fishing, camping and the annual hunting trip to Minocqua with his family. With a kind and gentle spirit, Elmer freely gave of himself to help others, whether it was to mow neighbor’s lawns, blow their snow, water their plants, or to guide his children in building their own homes. He also loved to give his time as a Big Brother volunteer with Big Brothers / Big Sisters to help children in need of companionship and guidance.

He was truly a little boy at heart who loved to spend time with his family and especially his grandchildren. He was an animal lover who could quickly gain the trust and love animals around him, but especially his Dachshund’s, Sugar & Honey whose bellies scraped the ground from the opulent life they lived with Elmer.

Survivors include his children: Kristy Koerber of New Holstein, Sherri K. Koerber of Chilton, Karen R. (Michael) Roll of West Bend, Quent S. Koerber of Wrightstown and his significant other, LeeAnn; 10 grandchildren: Ben (Tara), Joey (Theresa), Karynne (Nathan), Joshua & fiancée Adrienne, Austin, Luke, Gina Rae, Zak (Amanda), Mikayla & Trevor; his extended family: Dave & Linda Shymanski, Matt Buresch, Morgan & Robyn; 2 sisters: LaVerne Storck, Arlene Hribar; a brother: Ronnie Koerber; and a sister-in-law: Bonnie Ewaskowitz. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 60 years: Jo Anne; a sister: Hazel (Bill) Small; and in-laws: Darlene Koerber, Augie Storck, & Robert Hribar.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Sunday, May 1, 2016 at the Kiel City Cemetery (225 River Terrace) in Kiel.

A memorial fund has been established in Elmer’s name at Lutheran Church of the Pines - 309 Hwy 90 Waveland, MS 39576.
