Lee Roy Free was born Jan. 21, 1922 in Lauderdale, AL to Tom Free and Flora Stanford Free. He attended grammar school and engaged in farming. He was single when he enlisted in the US Army on Sept. 22, 1942 at Ft. McClellan, AL. He was sent to training at Camp Stewart and Ft. Benning, GA (1942-1943). He trained to be a Medic in the 455th AAA Bn. He was one of the medics reporting to Capt. David Faber, the battalion surgeon. Shipped to England in Sept. of 1943, with the rest of the 455th AAA, he was attached to the Second Platoon of Battery 'B', under Lt. Richard Gaston. The unit sailed for Normandy, France in July 1944 and became part of Geo. Patton's Third Army in the XX Corps. They took part in the Race Across France, and eventually into Germany and Austria. T/5 (Corporal) Lee R. Free's Platoon had more casualties than any other in the 455th AAA, so he must have had a lot of work to do. In Germany in 1945, he worked under Dr. Milton Feltenstein. Battery 'B' was on the Inn River in Austria when the War ended. In Sept. of 1945, Lee and the unit returned to the U.S. aboard the "Howard Victory" from Le Havre, France to Boston.
