Bertha Josephine McKeel Curtis was born Saturday, June 16, 1934 in Springfield, Missouri to Leonard Bowden McKeel and Josephine Eliza Rachel Parker.
She married Neldon DeVon Curtis on Friday, June 5, 1953 in the Salt Lake Temple. He preceded her in death on Sunday, October 7, 2012. They were the parents of five children: Kenda (Gary) Winn, Janet (Jerry) McWillis, Karen (Greg) Houskeeper, Sheryl (Randy) Broomhead, and Larry (Shannon) Curtis. At the time of her death, Bertha had twelve grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren.
From 1980 to 1996, she was a house mother to children in the crisis nursery at the Family Support Center in Sugar House.
Bertha was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in a number of callings, including Primary President, Relief Society President, and was a dedicated Visiting Teacher. A longtime member of the Butler Twelfth Ward, she was a member of the Butler Hill Ward at the time of her death.
Aunt Bertha passed away from complications of cancer on the afternoon of Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at her home. She was eighty-one years, eight months, and fifteen days old.
Funeral services were held on Friday, March 4, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in the Butler Hill Ward Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 2695 East Fort Union Boulevard (7000 South) in Cottonwood Heights. A viewing was held on Thursday, March 3, 2016 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Mountain View Memorial Estates Mortuary located at 3115 East Bengal Boulevard (7800 South) in Cottonwood Heights and prior to the services at the church on Friday from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m.
Aunt Bertha was laid to rest following the conclusion of the funeral services in the Mountain View Memorial Estates Cemetery.
