Bertha Josephine McKeel Curtis was born Saturday, June 16, 1934 in Springfield, Missouri to Leonard Bowden McKeel and Josephine Eliza Rachel Parker.

She married Neldon DeVon Curtis on Friday, June 5, 1953 in the Salt Lake Temple. He preceded her in death on Sunday, October 7, 2012. They were the parents of five children: Kenda (Gary) Winn, Janet (Jerry) McWillis, Karen (Greg) Houskeeper, Sheryl (Randy) Broomhead, and Larry (Shannon) Curtis. At the time of her death, Bertha had twelve grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren.

From 1980 to 1996, she was a house mother to children in the crisis nursery at the Family Support Center in Sugar House.

Bertha was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in a number of callings, including Primary President, Relief Society President, and was a dedicated Visiting Teacher. A longtime member of the Butler Twelfth Ward, she was a member of the Butler Hill Ward at the time of her death.

Aunt Bertha passed away from complications of cancer on the afternoon of Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at her home. She was eighty-one years, eight months, and fifteen days old.

Funeral services were held on Friday, March 4, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in the Butler Hill Ward Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 2695 East Fort Union Boulevard (7000 South) in Cottonwood Heights. A viewing was held on Thursday, March 3, 2016 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Mountain View Memorial Estates Mortuary located at 3115 East Bengal Boulevard (7800 South) in Cottonwood Heights and prior to the services at the church on Friday from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m.
Aunt Bertha was laid to rest following the conclusion of the funeral services in the Mountain View Memorial Estates Cemetery.

Funeral services were held under the direction of Bishop Will Cooper.
The family prayer was offered by Randy Broomhead.
The prelude, accompaniment, and postlude was offered by Penney Henriksen.
The chorister was Cam Court.
The invocation was offered by Lisa Houskeeper Christiansen.
Musical numbers performed included: "I Stand All Amazed," which was performed by the congregation; "Amazing Grace," which was performed by Brian Allen and Chantel Allen Nate; "In The Garden," which was performed by Chandra Broomhead, Diane Carlson, Diane Carlson, Lisa Christiansen, Shannon Curtis, Amanda Fox, Annia Houskeeper, Charie Huff, Michonne McGovern, Michelle Nielson, and Katie Winn; and "God Be with You Till We Meet Again," which was performed by the congregation.

The benediction was offered by Gary Winn.
With "Our Savior's Love" playing on the organ, the family exited the chapel and proceeded to Mountain View Memorial Estates Cemetery, where the grave was dedicated by Greg Houskeeper.
Pallbearers included: Morey Carlson, Nathan Christiansen, Larry D. Curtis, Dresden Curtis, Logan J. Curtis, Travis Fox, Kevin Houskeeper, Rob McGovern, Jerry McWillis, and Eric Nielson.
Honorary pallbearers included: Randy Broomhead, Nashton Christiansen, Greg Houskeeper, Gary Winn, Kamdyn Christiansen, Strider W. Curtis, and Austin Mears.

"She was born June 16, 1934 in Springfield, Mo. to Leonard and Josephine McKeel. She married Neldon DeVon Curtis on June 5, 1953 in the Salt Lake Temple.

"She is survived by children Kenda (Gary) Winn, Janet (Jerry) McWillis, Karen (Greg) Houskeeper, Sheryl (Randy) Broomhead, Larry (Shannon) Curtis; siblings Lorene Shaffer, Bill McKeel, June Schaefer, Don McKeel, Diane McKeel; 12 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren. Grandma BJ took part in raising, building up, supporting those decedents, leaving indelible impressions on each.

"Bertha spent her life caring for children including her own and scores of foster children and others in her work for the LDS church as a Primary and Relief Society President, among other duties, especially visiting teaching.

"Her professional life was spent as house mother for children in a crisis nursery at the Family Support Center in Sugarhouse. She trained and supervised other temporary and surrogate parents, yet took a day-to-day hand in helping kids in tough situations feel love, safety and structure. Her love will be sorely missed; her influence resonates widely.

"Heaven will have to keep fastidiously clean and organized to match her standards.
