Danforth D. Bolton, 87, of Oneonta died Tuesday, March 20, 1990, in the Bayfront Medical Center, St. Petersburg, Fla., where he was admitted on Thursday, March 15, as the result of injuries incurred on that date in a vehicular accident in St. Petersburg.

He was born Feb. 24, 1903, in Oneonta, the son of the Hon. W. Irving and H. Delia (Walling) Bolton. He married Marguerite Cooke, who survives, on July 8, 1925, in Oneonta.

A lifelong area resident, he was a graduate of Oneonta High School. In 1922 he became an employee of the Oneonta Building and Loan Association, later Oneonta Federal Savings and Loan Association and now Astoria Federal Savings and Loan Association, which was founded by his late father. He was president and chairman of the Board of Directors at the time of his retirement in 1971, which terminated 49 years' active service to the institution. He was Director Emeritus at the time of his death. He was also a director of the Wilber National Bank from June 21, 1957, until his retirement on March 18, 1977, when he became Director Emeritus of that institution also. He was a 50-year member of the Board of Directors of Otschodela Council, Boy Scouts of America, of which he was treasurer at the time of his death and for many years before.

During World War II he served in the U.S. Air Force at Stewart AFB, Newburgh, attaining the rank of Major before being honorably discharged in 1945. He was also a Past Commander of the former Company G, New York State National Guard, Oneonta, from which he retired several years ago.

He served several terms as Alderman from Oneonta's 2nd Ward, during which time he served as Acting Mayor. He also served for many years on the city's Planning Board, which included several terms as chairman. And he was a former member of the Board of Directors of A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

A member of the First United Methodist Church, Oneonta, since 1914, he was a member and treasurer of the Church Board at the time of his death. A life member of Oneonta American Legion Post 259, with which he had been affiliated for 42 years, he was also a member of the 40 and 8 of the American Legion, and of the Oneonta Veterans' Association. Additionally, he was a 60 year member of Oneonta Lodge 466, F. & A.M., and was a member of the Oneonta Lodge of Perfection, the Otseningo Bodies, the Binghamton Consistory of the Scottish Rite, and the Kalurah Temple, A.A.O.M. Shrine of Binghamton.

Besides his wife, he is survived by one niece, three nephews, and several grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, March 26, 1990, in the First United Methodist Church of Oneonta, with the Rev. William D. Bouton, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. that same day at the Bolton Family Burial Site in Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

Friends may call after 7 p.m. Sunday, March 25, 1990, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.
