He was the son of Charles and Catharine (Kinslow) Simmons who immigrated to Michigan from England and Ireland, respectively. The family men were miners.

James married Susie Abrams in 1890 in Houghton County, Michigan and they followed the mining work, living in several upper Michigan peninsula towns. They then moved to Arizona where he worked at the Globe Mine as a master mechanic, and also for American mining interests in Mexico. They moved to Fresno in about 1915 and eventually Sanger, where they became grape farmers.

They had 6 children: George Clyde, Ethel Annie, Mabel, Nellie Rose, James Lawrence and Mary Pearl Simmons.

His wife Susie, sons George Clyde & James Lawrence, and great niece Myrtle James Ewing are also interred at Sanger Cemetery.
