Herbert L. Godfrey, a longtime Ocean City funeral director. An Ocean City resident since 1947, he was born in Tuckahoe and was a life long resident of Cape May County, where he attended Upper Township Schools and graduated from Ocean City High School.

Mr. Godfrey had owned and operated Godfrey Funeral Home in Ocean City since 1960. He dad worked in the funeral home then known as Godfrey-Smith Funeral Home from 1947 to 1960, when he purchased the business. In 1972, he and his wife built and opened the Godfrey Funeral Home of Palermo.

He was a World War II Coast Guard veteran with service in the South Pacific on the USS Callaway, and was wounded in the Lengayen Gulf in 1944.

He had served on the Cape May County Park Commission and the Ocean City Housing Authority and been a member of the Board of Trustees of the Ocean City Historical Museum. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Ocean City Home Savings & Loan.

He was a member of St. Peter's United Methodist Church in Ocean City

He was a member of the Ocean City/Upper Township Rotary Club, where he had served as president and had been the oldest member in terms of service to the club. He was named a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of the Ocean City Lodge 171 Free and Accepted Masons , the Ocean City Masonic Club, the Riverboat Club, the Ocean City Married Couples Club, the Hazelton Vets, the National and New Jersey Funeral Directors Associations, and the Navey League. He was a charter member of the Jersey Cape Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America,

He was a graduate of Eckels College of Mortuary Science, an affiliate of Temple University

Earlier, he had been active in scouting. serving as a Club master for Pack 54 in Ocean City.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Teresa, a son Hwbert L. 2d, two daughters, Susan and Sallie, two grandsons.
