Irving was the son of Stephen & Gertrude L. (Bartlett) COOMBS. He married Eliza Jane NEWHALL and they had four children: Marie Elizabeth, b. 15 Sep 1874; Stephen W., b. 25 May 1877; John, b. 15 Oct 1880 and Gertrude H., b. 21 Feb 1885.

At age 19 he enlisted in the Civil War as a Pvt on 11 Oct 1862 in Co. H, NH 15th INF. He mustered out 13 Aug 1863 in Concord NH.

He was a Baptist pastor and served several churches in VT: Fletcher 1875-76, Enosburg 1879-81, Essex 1880-81, 1885-86; Essex Jct 1880-82; Bristol 1883-85; Jericho 1885-86; and North Springfield 1887-88.
