Ralph George Atkinson of Naples, FL passed away November 16, 2012. He was born in Ann Arbor, MI and moved to the St. Johns, MI area when he was six years old. He was Salutatorian of the Rodney B. Wilson class of 1934. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Chemical Engineering in June, 1938 and June, 1939 from the University of Michigan. He went with The Standard Oil Company in June, 1939 and retired as Manager of the B.P. (formerly Sohio) refinery in Lima, OH June, 1981.

He was in Army Ordnance from January, 1941 to November 5, 1945. He was Army Ordnance Supply Officer in Tunisia and Sicily. He joined the First U.S. Army Headquarters in England to help plan the invasion of the continent. He was responsible for all Ordnance supplies except gasoline the first 30 days on the continent. Lt. Col. Atkinson landed in Normandy D Day plus six. He received many awards, as well as the United States Legion of Merit for his exceptional service as Ordnance Supply Officer. France awarded him the French Legion of Honour. After WW II in Europe, Lt. Col. Atkinson was on the Ordnance Board in Aberdeen, MD until his release from active duty in November, 1945. Then Mr. Atkinson returned to Sohio in Cleveland, OH with his wife and son, James.

Mr. Atkinson married Alice Cressman June 14, 1941. They had three children, James Atkinson, Esq. (deceased), Jane Gromelski, Esq., and Dr. Bruce Atkinson. They have five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
