Louis W. Alpher was born in 1889 in Justingrad (aka Ustingrad and Yustingrad), Kiev (modern day Ukraine) according to his WWI draft registration card. Justingrad in the 1880s was part of the Russian Empire. He came to the US in May, 1890. By the age of 16, he was a clerk in a dry goods store. According to his 1920 passport application, he was assigned to grave registration in Europe. He returned from Europe in 1922 and married Doris Mayerson Pepis, the widow of Nathaniel Harris Pepis, whose daughter Renee Doris Pepis was 2 years old at the time of the marriage in 1922. In Brooklyn, he was a real estate broker, operator, and builder of garages, gas stations, auto laundries, and industrial properties. He was living at 161 St. Johns Place in Brooklyn in 1930 and at 585 E. 16th St. in Brooklyn in 1940 with his wife Roslyn and their daughters Renee and Phyllis. Louis and Roslyn had grandchildren Marc Harris Alport, Richard Allen Bernstein, and Robert Bernstein. Louis died in 1963, probably in Brooklyn.
