Bob (Robert) Lee Bennett, 83, of Danville, went to be with his Lord and Savior at 12:38 p.m. on Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at his home, Danville, Illinois.

Bob was born on Jan. 29, 1933 in Danville, the son of Albert and Lizzie (Williams) Bennett. Bob's childhood is a truly American story of barefoot summer days, a home lit with oil lamps and warmed by a potbellied stove. Farm chores were performed before and after his classes in a one-room schoolhouse. It was in this one-room school where he met his lifelong love, Jessie Ingalsbe. She was the only girl in their grade school class.

He and Jessie were married on Feb. 10, 1952 at the Old Union Church of Christ, Danville. She survives.

Seven children were born of this marriage, Jan (Jerry) Crouser, Colleen (Derald) Phillips, Shawn (Jona) Bennett, Loren (April) Bennett, Scott (Julie) Bennett, Joshua (Trena) Bennett and Eric Bennett, along with over 55 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, five sisters and one grandson (Jesse Bennett).

Bob attended one-room schools (Bunker Hill and Fairchild) in Blount Township, Henning High School and Danville Junior College (now DACC).

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1950 and retired from the Navy's Submarine Service in 1971, having received numerous awards and citations. He again retired in 1993 as a child protection investigator for the State of Illinois.

Bob was a member of Grape Creek Baptist Church. Bob loved to travel, which he and Jessie did extensively. He enjoyed antique tractors, new cars, attending Professional Bull Riding (PBR) events with his wife Jessie, and spending time with his family.
