Enlisted September 12, 1861 at Cameron, Adams Township, Monroe County, Ohio at age 18 for a three year commitment; mustered in with company November 18, 1861, at Camp Carlile, West Virginia; participated in several skirmishes and battles including the battles of Winchester and Port Republic; admitted to military hospital, August 25, 1862, in Alexandria, Virginia; transferred to military hospital at Portsmouth Grove, Rhode Island; discharged March 14, 1863, due to 'chronic diarrhea', at Portsmouth Grove, Rhode Island, on Surgeon's certificate of disability.

Regimental Descriptive Book lists Private Headley upon enlistment as 18 years old, fair complexion, light hair, blue eyes and a farmer.
